OUGD503 - Collaborative Brief Brainstorm

Collaborative Practice

The Problems:
⁃Stereotypes
⁃Judgement
⁃Differences: how people get into dance, street dance may be more relaxed in their approach and encouragement to outsiders whilst ballet is much more start from a young age and build it up, quite a strict community.
⁃Experiences: how different dancers are treated in certain circumstances.

The Brief/Rationale:
A performance that combines the two types of contrasting dance in order to break stereotypes and bring the two dance communities together to highlight the way in which both dance styles can compliment each other.

Putting on a dance show showing the contrast and stereotypes between different types of dance within the community.

Theme/Dances:
Romeo and Juliet type story?

Potentially give them a piece of music, SD have first 8 bars, B have next 8 bars etc etc for the opening. Shows a sample of what the show will be about.
A strong SD piece
A strong B piece
SD piece more contemporary - one member of ballet
B piece a bit more up beat - one member of SD in it
End with a collaboration of both mixing together, B doing street and visa versa etc

Considerations:
⁃Photographer
⁃Someone to film the performance
⁃Venue
⁃Charity?
⁃Tickets/advertisement/program
⁃How many dances/how long the show
⁃Theme - breaking the stereotype, bringing the two types of dance together, showing the process
⁃Arts funding
⁃Makeup artist

OUGD503 - Brief Exploration

Brief Exploration:

How do you balance what you want to do, design produce with what the brief requires?
Do the brief offer enough breadth and scope for the development of a range of responses whilst at the same time allowing you to focus your practice?
What are the realistic timescales for completing the brief? Are you working to these?
Have you clearly identified what the problem is before you start?
Wheere is the challenge in the brief and what will you get out of doing it?
What do you need to present and how will you present it?
Individual?.. Collaborative?

OUGD503 - Penguin Book Cover Research

Penguin Book Cover

Noughts and Crosses - Malorie Blackman

Summary:
  • Young adult novel.
  • Dystopia - explore social and political structures.
  • Alternative history where African people gained a technological and organisational advantage over European people.
  • Alternative 21st century Britain.
  • Sephy is a cross - dark skinned, wealthy and superior, Callum is a nought - light skinned and poor.
  • Sephy and Callum are best friends in secret as it is frowned upon due to the different skin colours. They are torn apart due to the segregation and opposing sides but are star crossed lovers who are unable to be together due to one being a nought and one being a cross. Sephy goes to boarding school where Callum joins a rebel group of crosses. Years later Sephy is captured by Callums rebel group and their childhood love is rekindled and they consummate it. Sephy becomes pregnant with Callums baby but Callum is arrested due to presumed rape and is therefore hanged. Sephy give the baby her fathers last name when she is born.
Themes:
Racial Injustice - the horror of racial injustice is one so severe, that many would rather die than witness.
  • e.g. Callums father is electrocuted trying to escape as he couldn't face the world any longer after his experiences.
  • Callums death - due to racial injustice from the assumption that he raped Sephy.
Love - Love can, but will not always result in a happily ever after. Those lucky enough to find true love, should embrace it with open arms.
  • Callum putting himself in danger to visit Sephy.
  • Callum telling Sephy he loves her in his dying moment.
Conflict - The ongoing war between the two different races.

Malorie Blackman - A bit about the author.
  • Born in 1962.
  • Qualified in computer science.
  • Racially abused after calling for more diversity in childrens books.
  • Noughts and crosses name idea came from the fact that it is "one of those games that nobody ever plays after childhood, because nobody ever wins."
  • Addressing racism - she noticed that plasters are only designed to be inconspicuous for white peoples skin.
  • Plays piano, computer games and writes poetry.
