Photos from Ident Filming
During the filming I took photographs which could possibly be used for the zine. Figure 1 shows a few of the images that were taken and the experiments with them for the zine. We looked at the use of a coloured overlay as a possible zine style. However we decided after referring back to the Pinterest board which we had initially created that we could do with having an extra photoshoot specifically for the zine so that we could set up the photos exactly how we want them.

OUGD603 - Ident Music
Ident Music
Emma Shuffleton did some research on the music that would be most appropriate to use in the ident whilst I was spending time editing it.
I found an article explaining the music decisions behind one of Channel 4's indent. 4Creative (Channel 4's in house creative agency) worked in collaboration with award winning director Douglas Wilson of Blink Productions. Wilson took his hand to the music himself, performing the music used in the idents. They used a soft guitar riff for the background music which fitted with the short film created. They also use some sound effects to emphasis what is happening in the film and to bring the large character made from the Channel 4 logo to life. To quote:
“It was originally just a demo on my old guitar but everything else we tried didn’t quite feel right”
I looked at few combinations of old tv idents in order to evaluate the type of music they play in the background. Below is a video with a mixture of different idents. All of them have some kind of voice over playing over the top giving a slight hint as to what the next programme is played along with some kind of music track. For BBC 1 and 2, they both seem to play the tune for around 1-2 seconds then the voice over comes on with the music turned down, then right at the end the music turns back up as the ident film finishes. ITV1 uses the same format however, instead of using different tracks, they use a variety of similar shorts with the same music being used – this is a softer, soothing track to fit the visuals. Channel 4 do also use similar tracks throughout their tv idents that relate to the visuals being displayed, similar to ITV1's soundtrack. They also use the same format of using a voice over to give a brief description of the programme thats coming up next.
Summary of the video: All the idents from BBC, ITV and Channel 4 use the same format of music then voice over then music whilst the film finishes. The music that is used in the idents are all fairly soft, soothing tracks that have the odd sound effect to make the sound relate to the visuals that are being shown.
This makes me think that we should be looking at adding in some of the sound effects of the biscuits falling over into the music track and also create a script for the voiceover. "

"I did some research into how we could find music that we could use on our ident without any copyright issues. I came across a Youtube video (Figure 1) that gave a few ways in which I was able to obtain copyright free music. The one site I found very useful was the audio library in Youtube (Figure 2). It was full of lots of different music tracks that could be downloaded for free. From the research I conducted, we decided that we want a more upbeat, electronic track to fit our ident. Since there was so many tracks to choose from, I simply filtered through the electronic tracks and played a few of them and downloaded a handful I felt would work. I played them to the group and we decided on four that we felt would work however, after putting the chosen ones with the video, we decide that 'Sunset Drive' was the most relevant track that worked the best with the visuals of the ident."
OUGD603 - Ident Studio Set Up
Ident Studio Set Up
For the set up of the video we used a space at my workplace - Virgin Active Gym. There is a area within the gym that is unoccupied at the moment as it is going to be refurbished in the future so it was the perfect open space for us to set up for our video. Figure 1 shows me outside the gym with all of the equipment which we had to take to the gym with us to set up. Figure 2 shows is an image of the room which we used before we put up the backdrop and all of the other equipment. Figure 3 is the set up. We used the pink material we had brought on the floor and as a backdrop. We then had 2 kit lights set up and three cameras to gain the different angles which we needed. 2 of the cameras were on tripods and I used the third for photographs and a close up angle.

OUGD603 - Ident Research Materials
Ident Material Research
After deciding on the visuals for the filming, Hannah and I went to Kirkgate market to find some material we can use as the backdrop. We wanted to use material instead of paper due to this relating to our tea time theme as the material is representative of a table cloth. We chose to get a pink fabric as this was inspired by the Pinterest board and some of the biscuits that we had planed to use for the filming. Figure 1 is the first fabric that we found in the market however, we all decided that this was not a bold enough colour and you could slightly see through the material which wouldn't have suited the aesthetic and could have affected the filming. Figure 2 is the chosen fabric that we decided on as it is a much brighter pink with a slight shine which would show up bold on camera. Figure 3 and 4 show the number of biscuits we actually got for this shoot – £15 worth in total! The majority of the biscuits were custard creams and bourbons as we felt that these would stand up better in order to create a domino effect for the Rube Goldberg Machine. We also got some Party Rings and other round biscuits in order to play around with other mechanisms, create some stacks and other potential domino sections to add more colour into the shoot.

OUGD603 - Ident Research Visuals
Ident Visual Research
When we were initially briefed we automatically came up with some ideas for the concept of tea time. Emma came up with the idea of using bourbons as dominos which made me think of a scene in one of my favourite films called The Road to El Dorado (Figure 1). The scene shows one of the main characters touching a coin which leads to a big domino effect resulting in an image being revealed from the fallen down pieces. We also created a Pinterest board between us (Figures 2 and 3) with some images that we though were aesthertically pleasing and found inspiring when thinking about the set design for the video in terms of the back drop and overall layout. We already knew that we wanted to use a bright, fun pink colour scheme which was initially inspired by Party Rings. These visuals were also the inspiration which we had for the aesthetic of the zine.

OUGD603 - Ident Initial Ideas
Ident Initial Ideas
In the initial idea stage of the process we thought about the ideas for the three concepts that we had come up with in the initial brain storm. The use of round foods would be fairly straight forward in the way it would work as it would just consist of rolling foods. We felt that this was to vague as a concept though as it would be difficult to show any consistency throughout the designing. The second concept that we considered was fast foods. We liked the idea of having some kind of sauce bottle having from above and swinging around in a circle in order to create the branding logo simply by the motion. This would happen as a chain reaction after different items of fast food being moved around, (a visual representation of this is drawn out in the box in Figure 1). However, we all agreed that the third concept of tea time had a lot more depth compared to the other two concepts.
Emma roughly sketched out some of the ideas we had thought about for concept three in order for to be able to visualise the ideas and how we could go about bringing them to life. The ideas included:
1. Domino effect using biscuits in order to create the spiral from the branding at the end
2. Domino effect using biscuits leading to biscuit falling into a teacup which has the channel's logo on
3. A biscuit pyramid made from the biscuits which can be knocked over to start another chain reaction
4. A tower of biscuits with one balanced on top which when knocked would land on a seesaw (made from biscuits) in order to lead onto another chain reaction
5. Biscuit attached to string being dropped into cup of tea which would dissolve causing weight on other side of the strong to drop and start the sequence
We had the idea of having one main feature that starts the chain reaction and then two or three other mechanisms which would then lead into the final biscuit spiral of the logo.

OUGD603 - Ident Brainstorm
Ident Brainstorm
When thinking about what we could do for the theme of our Ident we had a view different ideas all revolving around our given topic of food. We focussed on three main ideas which were 'tea time', 'movie snacks' and 'round foods'. The mind map below demonstrates the thought process that we went through.
OUGD603 - Ident Brief
After the Rule Goldberg workshop we were giving a brief which related to the day.

OUGD603 - Magna Massage Website
Magna Massage Website
The client had already paid for a website and domain but he wanted me to update it as best I could using the site which he had chosen. He wanted the website to be a lot simpler than the one he already had as he had overloaded it with information meaning it was less attractive for the viewer. We also talked about using an infinite scroll rather than a load of different pages and options. This meant that all the information was present straight away for the viewer and all they had to do was scroll down a page to see it all. We made it a lot less wordy and also used the imagery from the shoot to keep consistency with the advertising.
The images above show the final website design. There are options throughout to book treatments and a map which shows the location of the studio space. This makes booking the appointments and getting in touch easy to do and the website is also very easy to navigate which is wasn't previously.
OUGD603 - Magna Massage Design Development
Magna Massage Development
The development stage involved trying a few different layouts across all the different deliverables that the client asked for using the chosen imagery. The client asked for flyers, posters and some business cards. The design developed from the initial design removing the black bar that was across the side of the picture for the information. Instead I incorporated the information more subtlety into the design of the poster and flyers.
The flyer only needed a small amount of information on as the client was planning on leaving them in the cafe that was below his studio. This meant that the location wasnt necessary to put on them, just the fact that students and the cafe customers recieve a 25% discount.
The poster needed to have more information on as this was what Chris was planning on using as the main source of information for people by leaving it in places he currently massages and giving posters to all the clients that he already has to help expand his business. The use of a full bleed image for the posters looks so much more aesthetically pleasing than the use of a black bar to place all the information.
Chris hadn't specifically asked for business cards however I wanted to experiment with the imagery and see how it would look when used for business cards. I wanted the business card to be simple so I therefore chose to use the black and white imagery keeping the design cut back to the use of just the use of the two colours black and white. The design used a repetition of his logo pasted across the front of the black and white image and then the use of just a black background on the underside with white writing and a white logo.
