OUGD505 - Questionnaire - Questions and Responces

As part of my research for this studio brief I decided to do a survey to find out a bit more information about the amount of people that suffer from depression and anxiety. This was to help me gain a better understanding of the amount of people surrounding us that are actually struggling when you wouldn't necessarily expect it. This was to also find out from a range of people what they thought would be a good idea for some sort of design that could help the people that are struggling but then also the people that are supporting them. The questions and answers can be seen below:

What age group are you in?

What gender are you?

Have you ever suffered from Depression yourself?

If answered no to ever having depression:
Do you have any friends or family who suffer or have suffered from depression?

If yes, do you feel that you have any understanding of what they were feeling?
  • In some ways yes as I can get anxious myself about certain things but I have never been in their shoes so in most ways no.
  • Not really, its almost impossible to know what goes through another persons head. What affects them and how they process things
  • No not at all
  • I understand it but I don’t necessarily know how they are actually feeling
  • I think people who i know suffer from depression are often trapped in a mental state they have no control over or often cant explain why they feel a specific way
In your own words, how would you define what depression is?
  • A mental illness that can prevent people from doing things due to all the things that come with depression such as anxiety, insomnia, etc.
  • Feelings of separation, lost loneliness, never being good enough, isolated from the world around you
  • Someone that is in a very bad place, down and not unhappy with their life
  • Dread, tiredness, feeling things won't get better
  • A medical condition
Do you think it would be easy to point out someone who is suffering from depression?

If so, how would you describe this stereotype?
  • You can never tell, but stereotypes would be people who are loners, always sad, unsocial etc.
  • Self harming, quiet, lonely
  • You can't everyone has it differently
Would you find a visual/experience based design based on the feelings of depression helpful to understand more about the mental illness?

If so, what sort of visual experience would you choose to use?
  • A video campaign explaining depression from the point of view of someone suffering with it, day in the life kinda thing?
  • Visual head set putting you into the world of the person suffering from depression
  • Perhaps typographic or illustration
  • a visual diagram of the brain seeing which parts of it are controlled or took over by depression (aka showing lack of serotonin in specific areas)
  • a visual diagram indicating what parts of the brain depression effects.
If answered yes to ever having depression:
What types of treatment have you tried?
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Tablets
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy
  • Psychotherapies
  • Counselling
  • Rekki Healing and Homeopathic Tablets
  • Holiday Rehab
Do you feel the form of treatment helped?
  • In a way but then after your weeks of treatment are up it’s like you are forgotten about and almost expected to be cured instantly.
  • Not really, once you go and open up to your GP they either offer you counselling or medication and you’re in and out in about 10 minutes and they don’t really seem interested in you.
  • Every treatment is different and most have their pros and cons.
  • Yes, the hypnotherapy changed my mind set and the holiday rehab took me away from life for a month which really helped find myself again.
  • A lot of my depression was situational, so once I managed to change my situation my depression got better.
Could you explain the way you felt when suffering from depression.
  • Didn’t want to socialise, kept myself busy with work.
  • Very alone, isolated and confused. No one else seemed to relate to my feelings and that became worrying.
  •  didn't sleep but didn't feel tired. I felt unable to be happy without reason. I just wanted to watch Netflix and ignore life. Like if time could just stop or everything could just end. I didn't want to die I just wanted life to pause for a while. It wasn't giving up necessarily just giving in for a while.
  • Nothing matters because death is inevitable and eventually all the people who remember you will die too and you’ll just be a lost name like everyone else, you want to die but you don’t want to miss out on anything so you’re just here.
  • Emotional, alone, and unworthy.
Were you worried about people opinions changing about you and your personality once they knew you suffered from mental health issues?

What do you feel would be the best way to stop this happening?
  • More awareness and speaking about it more.
  • If more people were made aware of these issues and maybe how to help people feeling this way
  • People just need to realise that people with a mental illness are normal people, we’re not dementors we’re just normal people who are more sad than other people.
  • EDUCATION
  • more education and awareness about mental health difficulties
Have you ever been worried about being stereotyped due to having mental health issues?

What do you think the classic stereotype for someone with depression is? How would you describe the stereotypical person?
  • Tired and doesn’t leave bed
  • Lazy, unmotivated, always sad, always feeling sorry for themselves and doesn’t want any help
  • Sad all the time, dirty and anti social
  • Weak. Crazy. Broken.
  • Someone who stays in bed all day, self-harms, cries a lot, fragile.
Do you think that some form of visual/experience based design based around the feelings of depression would help people to gain a better knowledge?

If so, what sort of visual experience would you choose to use?
  • Campaign
  • Drawings
  • Something that helps to educate
  • Maybe a short illustrated film/animation something that’s quite interactive
  • A short film in the eyes of someone with a mental health problem
