Interim Critical Analysis

Figure 1
After the first critical analysis I developed the design further using some of the pointers that I had been given. I also used the further research that I had done to create some more designs. I decided to stick with the use of one of the more understated musical symbols that is from the sound hole of a violin, and also used the lower case. I decided that the best typeface for the design would be Century. This is because century was designed to emphasise elegance and crispness using strokes that end in finely pointed serifs which allows the word to look more fluent. Figure 1 shows the 5 variations of the design that were created and Figure 2 shows one made on the computer. These are the designs that were critiqued for the interim critical analysis.

The notes that were written by others about my work showed me that the use of the violin sound hole as an "f" is a popular design decision. I was also told that the way I have joined the letters represents an instrument or piece of music which is exactly what I was hoping for. They said that this made the word flow more naturally in the same way that a good piece of music flows. Another design idea that was complimented was the way I added the lines to the design at the bottom of figure one. They said this design is clever because it looks like the string of an instrument or the lines on sheet music. I created this design with the sheet music lines or stave in mind. I want to add two more lines so that there are five line which each would represent a different musical pitch.

There was a mixture of feedback relating to the use of a ligature between the 's' and the 't'. Some people said that they liked it as it looked like a musical note in the way that they join together, however others said it is slightly unnecessary if it doesn't have an actual purpose. I will experiment with and without this ligature in further designs to help decide on the best outcome.

To improve, I need to experiment with the design further and attempt to create some further variations which would allow a more varied choice for the client. I also need to experiment more with designing on the computer to get a professional finish on the designs created.
