Research

Fenestrate - small openings or transparent window-like areas.

Brand: Musical instruments.

Figure 1
  • Mainly String and wind instrument - they have sounds holes which is the connection to the word.
Figure 1 shows logo for famous musical instrument brands.

The three most famous and popular music brands are:

Yamaha:
Figure 2
  • Logo is coloured in violet and has a white background.
  • The 'M' has a middle column shorter than the outer legs lifting it off of the baseline.
  • The symbol has three tuning forks within a circle.
  • The logo used to have a "Chinese phoenix holding a tuning fork in its mouth" but this was developed over the years to what it is now.
  • Yamaha creates millions of types of instrument worldwide.
  • See figure 2 for logo example.

Figure 3

Fender:
  • Leading guitar manufacturer worldwide.
  • Fenders logo has white writing in a red box.
  • Known for all things rock and roll.
  • See figure 3 for logo example.

Gibson:
Figure 4
  • Many U.S Factories make and sell Gibson branded products.
  • Logo is black writing in a white box.
  • All of the x-height letter are the same height with the 'G' and 'Y' falling below the baseline.
  • See figure 4 for logo example.

After my initial research I was aware that the companies that I had looked at so far are not the sort of music companies which I should be basing my research around as they do not tend to sell classical or acoustic instruments. The reason I chose classical and acoustic instruments is because they possess sound holes whereas an electric guitar for instance does not, this means that it would not be at all representative of the word fenestrate which is the brand name.
I want my company to be more based on acoustic and classical instruments so therefore did more research into already existing brands for these types of instruments.

These companies tend to use lower case lettering and the the first letter as a capital. This is the type of design I wanted to create for the 'Fenestrate' brand.

Some examples of these companies are Primavera, Cecilo and Cremona.
The all sell string instrument and have logo with lower case lettering that look quite elegant, as seen in Figure 5. I think that these kind of logo are very representative of the music that these instruments create and my logo needs to have this same design basis to fit into the market.
