OUGD603 - Kick Cards, Research

Research

At the beginning stages of the research it was crucial to look at playing cards and the way in which they are designed. As this was a collaborative project, Kamal had already decided that he wanted to do some Jordan playing cards as trainers are one of his biggest interests. The illustrations were therefore already underway so as the designer it was important to look at the design of playing cards and to bring the concept into the designs. The images are reflected on all the faces with the suit and number of the card placed in diagonal corners. The back of the cards is highly pattered and then to be very reoccurring patterns across the surface. They are also normally one colour with white detail. I also looked at a set of bespoke playing cards as seen above. This was interesting to see how someone else has interpreted playing cards and replacing the norm with a bespoke design. Thinking about the concept, it was decided that the whole of the design of the cards should be based around the shoes. The back of the cards was therefore to be designed based on the sole and the tuckbox inspired by the Jordans shoe box. This meant that looking at the soles of Jordans shoes and the shoe box which they come in was part of the research.
