Wayfinding Further Design Development

Wayfinding Further Design Development

Once I had decided after the crit that the best idea for the development of the board game would be to keep the original colours and design of the board I decided I wanted to find some way to include the pictograms that I had original been designing. I therefore look back at the designs that I had created using the roofs of the buildings and in a similar way to the triangles and the arrows made a clipping mask using the building silhouettes I had created. I chose to do this because I thought that it added an extra clue for people to try and figure out which building is which and also added an interesting aspect to the building silhouettes.

When I discussed this with my peers they all agreed that the use of the pictograms inside the silhouettes worked much better than the original designs that I had done. This was because it took the two different combinations of pictograms that I had designed combined them together allowing all of my designs to be part of the final piece but in a more subtle way. I therefore decided that this was the best way to present my pictograms as they are the most interesting but aesthetically pleasing designs of all the ones I have created.

The designs that I have created are both a combination of objective and subjective. They are subjective as they are down to personal interpretation due to having to figure out the clues but they are objective as they do send you in a certain way. This is because if you do not get the clues correct and go to the correct place you will not be able to figure out who the architect of the building is. This means that eventually the people playing the game will have to end up in the place that the game wants them to otherwise they wont get the answer to that question. This therefore means that the pictograms do possess aspects of objectivity as well as subjectivity.

I decided to keep these pictograms black as due to decided to keep the game board to its original colours it would be extremely overwhelming to have the pictograms in different colours as well. The board game consists of the colours yellow, two different types of green, white and black. Therefore keeping the pictograms in black and white seemed important so that the game board as a whole did not appear too crowded and overwhelming to the target audience. This is all evidenced in Figure 1.

I decided to develop the idea of using giant figures at the front of the buildings representing the architects after speaking to the group. As I planned on using this idea I needed to develop a key so that people would be able to see which architect it is that designed which buildings. I designed a small key to go with the board game which can be seen in Figure 2. The people playing the game would not be aware of which architect designed which building until they found the building and saw which colour counter was stood in front of the building. I think that this idea adds some depth to my wayfinding system because it gives the people playing the game some incentive to search for the buildings using the clues.
