OUGD504 - Editing Printed Publication

Editing the Printed Publication:

In order to complete my design I needed to cut out the inside of the gin bottles in the recommended combinations section. To do this I just used a craft knife and a ruler in order to get clean neat cuts as seen in the images below.

Once the bottles were cut out it allowed me to experiment with the 3 different layers which I had created for the combination section. I wanted to use a layering affect as explained in my designs to make the section of the book representative of the drinks. By using the layers it represented the different layers that are used in order to make the different gin and tonic drinks.

I tested two different ways of presenting the section which had very slight differences. The first as seen below on the left hand side included using the same paper for the tonic section and cutting it down to half of the page size to allow for the fruit to be seen behind. The second option as seen below on the right hand side was to print the coloured section onto the tracing paper and use this as the middle layer allowing for the whole of the fruit section to be seen through the clear and transparent colour. After discussing with one of the tutor I decided that the best option was to use the tracing paper as it added extra detail to the design and an extra material to the book. I was also slightly worried that if I were to use half of a page the edges of those pages could quite easily begin to peel upwards and therefore make the book look more worn.

The pictures below show the three different layers that are used to create to combination section. I think that the way which they turned out is as affective as I'd hoped for it to be. If I were to look at creating it again I would maybe consider experimenting with acetate in order to have a more clear layer between the front and back layers. I think the tracing paper does add an interesting texture but acetate may look more well made in order to run with the theme of the rest of the book. There was also a slight expenses issue with the use of acetate as well as the book was very thick so already cost a lot for me to make, this therefore meant I had to make some executive decisions in order to cut the cost to fit my personal budget.
