When designing the book I was thinking that it could be good to focus on the fact that its the oldest pub in leeds and incorporate some of these aspects into the design. For instance incorporating to Templar Cross seen in my research to link the publication to the pub.
The book needs to be hard wearing as it will be handled by a fair amount of people in the pub, however as Gin is seen as a classy drink it needs to be a neat and clean design.
The front cover could be hard back to solve the hard wearing problem and maybe incorporate the Templar Cross embossed onto the front. Another idea would be to have a Gin glass embossed or debossed onto the front cover with the title written above, below or inside of the glass.
As extra protection for the book, I am considering the idea of using a sleeve or a half sleeve. The use of a half sleeve would be a similar concept as the labels that are seen on bottles of Gin. The sleeve could therefore be designed in a similar style to Gin labels that are used on the bottles.
Design Ideas for the Layout:
When talking with my client/partner about how the book should be made we talked about it needing to be hardback and then possibly having some embossing on the front. This would hopefully help the design to keep a classy feel as gin and tonic is generally seen to be a fairly classy drink. We talked about the cover colour being white, this would keep the design neat and clean and also could be representative of the fact that gin is clear to look at but the flavours are overpowering. The book in the same way would be colourless on the surface but then full of colour on the inside.
The idea for the colour pallet was to look at using the fever tree colours so that there isn't too much going on and too many different colours being used. As these colours would need to be present in the book anyway we thought it would be nice to stick to using them as a colour pallet.
I therefore made a colour swatch from the tonic colour pallet so that we could take a better look at the colours that we could be working with.
Layout
The layout of the inside of the publication will start off with the pages have the gins that are available and will be followed by the tonics and fruits available. After the main information about the gins and tonic the pages that will follow are going to have the information about the different recommended combinations for the drinks.
Using the different elements of the content we looked at, the combinations were displayed in a way which they look quite visual containing all of the contents which will have earlier been discussed in the book so that the reader understands what they are and what they are about.
