Penguin Book Cover - Typographic Treatments

Typographic Treatments:

One of the studio tasks was to create a series of typographic treatments as a response to the penguin book cover brief.

This book cover design is based on all of the reasons that are discussed as to why the killers in the book did what they did. I used these possibilities and created a typographic treatment that spells the name of the book by using the first letter of each point that is discussed. I decided to put the first letters in the colour red to make it clear that it is the book title and the colour is representative of the points and the themes present in the book.

For this typographic treatment I experimented with a really simple design. I choose to use black as the background of the cover because it is a dark story about betrayal and murder. I then chose to use a san serif typeface and use the colour red to accent the theme of murder that is present in the title.
For the final typographic treatment I wanted to do something interesting with the type on the front cover. I decided to use part of the story line so connected the letter 'L' in cole and one of the 'O's in blood to represent the noose that is used to execute the killers in the story. I think that this added a subtle incorporation of the story to encourage a person to read the book to find out the reasoning behind the cover design.
