Research - Screen Print

Chosen Event:

  • Adam Bojelian, Memorial Talk, Horizon Leeds.

Adam Bojelian

Adam was a 12 year old boy from Leeds who suffered with server cerebral palsy. His favourite colour was green and he loved spending time with his family. Adams cerebral palsy meant that his only form of communication was through blinking his eyes. The way that this communication was discovered was when Adam was younger and at nursery, his classmates were singing a nursery rhyme and Adam began to blink along in time with the words. This form of communication developed as his family used it to ask him questions and he would blink for yes and stare for no. Adam had a real enthusiasm for poetry and used his method of communication to write his own poems. The poems could sometimes take up to a day to even write one line as he had to go through 100s of words till they found the one that he would blink to show he wanted to use it.

Here are a couple of examples of some of the poems written by Adam Bojelian:

WINTER

Winter is
Frost on my window pane like an artist's stroke
Simmering it sparkles with the changing light
Icicles clinging from the roofs and doorways
People slipping and sliding balancing precariously
Along winding street and lanes

It is a winter tapestry
Snow covered hill
A frozen lake that a gliding swan swims on

It is a glittering star
A silver rocket
Landing on the moon

Shivering freezing sneezing
Finger and toes
Face red
Nose running

Hats on heads
Collars turned up
People wrapped up
Thick socks, wellies, furry boots

Winter is a frosty landscape
A colourless time
Windows frosted over
Fields covered in snow
All is white

CHRISTMAS GIBBONS POEM
Gibbons are fun at Christmas,
They don't mind the snow,
Gibbons are fun at Christmas,
But there is something about them you don't know.
They are Santa's secret weapon,
They work on Christmas night,
Swinging across the roof tops,
They really are a sight.
Bringing lots of presents,
All around the world they go,
More agile than the reindeers,
Swinging to and fro.
They are Santa's secret posties,
Bringing gifts wrapped in paper and ribbons,
You thought the reindeers did this job,
Now you know it is the gibbon.

LEADERSHIP

This rhyme is a puzzle, as you will see,
This rhyme tells you what a good leader should be.
A good leader respects the young and the old,
A good leader observes and is prepared to be bold.
A good leader is brave and will try something new
A good leader works hard and gives praise when its due.
A good leader expects the best from all staff,
A good leader brings happiness and shares in a laugh.
A good leader supports patients and gives them the best,
A good leader teaches staff to be ahead of the rest.
A good leader explains if something goes amiss,
A good leader rejoices in times of great bliss.
If you study this rhyme and look very close,
You'll discover the leader I admire the most.

I decided to base my screen print around Adam Bojelian because there is a memorial service which has recently happened at Horizon in Leeds to celebrate his life and the mark that he left. It was a public event so anyone was welcome to go to the service.
