OUGD503 - Collaboration Logo

Logo

The name of our dance show is unified. This is because the word is representative of the concept of two different types of dance coming together and working together. We therefore needed the logo to also be representative of this as well. We talked about the use of a ligature or some sort of connection in the word in order for it to demonstrate the act of joining together. We also decided that an illustration wasn't necessary within the logo as we wanted the main focus to be the name. We therefore wanted this to be clear and readable.

The first set of typography that Emma looked at can be seen below. We thought it was important to look at a range of typefaces that could be seen as representative of both ballet and street styles of dance. The typefaces would also need to be manipulated in some way for them to be truly representative of the word unified.

Originally after looking these fonts Emma started to work with EloquentJFPro due to the ligature between the 'f' and the 'i' which we had already talked about using. We also thought that this typeface, due to it being a serif typeface could be representative of ballet but the boldness of the text makes it more dynamic and therefore also representative of street. Emma experimented with this typography, changing the kerning. We didn't however decide that this type gave the look that we wanted due to it being fairly complex and so instead took the use of the ligature and experimented using this with a different font.

The typeface that Emma chose to use was Halyard Display. From looking at the different typefaces it became clear that the best letter to use for a ligature was the 'f'. As we had decided that for the type to be representative of ballet as well as street we needed to include serif type as well as san serif. Emma therefore took Halyard Display and Georgia and played around with using both types together. This was therefore getting closer to a final outcome as it was much more representative of the word unified as two different typefaces were being combined.

The last design of the four was the one we decided was the best as the use of joining the 'f' to the 'i's' on both sides of it was the best way to represent the word unified. This is because it seems like two lots of things being joined together by a middle man. This is just like the dance show as it is two lots of dance being joined together by us putting on a show. We liked this however felt it needed to look more like a logo rather than just a typographic logo. Emma therefore added a circle around the word as the definition of a circle is 'a group of people with a shared profession, interests, or acquaintances' as well as one of the keywords associated with circle being 'unity'. This gives a nice representation to the logo whilst also giving it more of a complete look. She then took the LUPUS UK colours and experimented with how it would look. The final logo will be using the purple background and white text, possibly using a white circle around it. We also went with the black outlined version as this can be useful on certain printed media.
