The first design idea is based on the theme of racial segregation that is present in the book. The barbed wire is representative of Callums father who was electrocuted trying to escape due to not being able to cope with the world around him any longer and the noose is representative of the way which Callum died. The house is representative of the life that Stephy lives which is much different to Callum and his father and the note from Callum that was waiting for her after years of not seeing each other.
The third design is focussed mainly on a comment made by the author which is part of the reason why she focussed on racism as a focus for her book. As a child she became aware that plasters were only tailored to white people skin rather than to black peoples skin. This is something that she always wondered about and why in her adult life she focussed part of her writing on racism. She also put this in the book but after research I discovered it was based on herself. Therefore the hands of the noughts are making the nought and then the cross will be made of the plasters that aren't tailored to the skin of the less superior race. I wanted this to be a photographic design as I think this would make the biggest impact on the person viewing the cover.
The fourth design is based on the part in the book where Stephy and Callum are in a cell together and they make love. Half of the front cover would be the cell bars and in the background would be a silhouette of the two together showing that even in the worse of places they wouldn't be anywhere else as they were with each other.
