OUGD503 - Penguin Book Cover Evaluation

Evaluation

I think that the use of photography as a media for this design worked quite effectively as it gave a the most realistic representation of the design and its meaning. The meaning to the design gives the cover some depth. It doesn't give to much away about the book but once the reader gets to the point in the book they will instantly understand whats going on. The photography for the cover had to be manipulated a fair amount to make it show what I needed it to and it appears to have worked quite well as the photograph still looks quite natural rather than appearing very manipulated. I do however think that I maybe could have experimented with the use of higher contrast so that the cross stands out even more and is a lot darker than the white hands. This could have made a larger impact and accented the message more. I also could have experimented with more colour. Although I don't think that the cover needs colour I think that it could have been a good thing to experiment with more during the development stages. Another small change that I could have looked at making would have been adding a little more space between the content and the crop marks so that the content isn't too close to the edge of the book. However, I would have had make the designs slightly smaller for this to work as otherwise the cover could have ended up looking quite cramped.
